Historical notes by Prof. Luigi Greco
Along Cathedral street left stands the prospectus of the church of the St. Vito Martire, one among monuments most significant Ostuni and Salento, with lines rococ. The temple was built between 1750 and 1752 and designed by an anonymous engineer of Naples. To make it blew down three buildings of the family noble Patrelli and the medieval church of St. Vito affected by the earthquake of February 20, 1743. Until the early seventies, the building was occupied by Carmelite nuns. They lived in the convent near the church. The convent and the church are currently owned by the town of Ostuni. The facade, the door has a slightly undulating piers rotated forty-five degrees on the entablature with two volutes kneeling. Aligned with the portal has a large gallery and the pediment shows features rococo curves and broken lines. Two acroteria and an elegant bell tower complete the elegant front of this temple, regarded by critics in the history of one of the first and best examples of rococo Puglia. The interior has five altars in stone of great artistic value and two choirs, also in stone, supported by two semi-arches with cherubs heads. Seven paintings by artists from Naples and Rome adorn the altars, and now have been removed and are kept in the annex of Pre-Classical Civilization Museum waiting to be restored. The chapels are dedicated to the Medici saints, Saint Therese, in the middle we have the chapel and altar at St Mary Magdalene and the Addolorata. Except the last neo-classical altar others are in the rococo style, and were executed by the master sculptor Francesco Morgese, author of numerous stone altars in various places of Salento. Also important is the kind of the main altar stone frame is produced by a single large block of stone. Sia outsiders interiors show clear signs degradation just concealed several layers lime whereby were covered internal walls. The front shows an alarming corrosion of the stone, while the bolts placed by several decades are avoiding the worst damage to the static nature of the whole building. In addition to paintings and altars pitrei, in a serious state of decay are also wood decor of the temple is rich, the eighteenth-century organ and the pulpit, doors, windows, entrance door, the grates.
