The cavalcade of Sant' Oronzo is the more waited for and important festivity of Ostuni. Every year 25, 26 and 27 of August, are days dedicate to the Saint: a procession of horses and knights saddled for festivity, parades for the city ways to guard the city’s Patron. The origins of the cavalcade were uncertain until little years ago. Today they can date back, with good safety margin, to the second half of the seventeenth century, just to the 1657. The plague invaded Salento, sparing Ostuni and other cities of Terra d’Otranto. The miracle was attributed to St. Oronzo and every 26 of August, the inhabitants of Ostuni wanted to go in procession to the sanctuary erected in his honor. Here they took the Saint paper-machè statue and carried it on the shoulders to the public square of the city. Often the decorations are handed down from generation to generation, like the gestures and the indispensable small secrets. The entire familiar nucleus dedicates itself to taking the habit, often helped by relatives and friends. One of the most important decoration is constituted in the beautiful cape decorated with arabesques with hundred of paillettes, applied one to one with great patience. The taking the habit continues with harness and ornaments of various type and largeness. Also the knight wears the uniform constituted by the chepì and a tunic, which remember the ornaments of the cape of the horse, and by white trousers. The taking the habit of the knight is very accurated, too and it remembers, for some aspects, the torero one. The last details, the white gloves, the riding crop and horse and knight become a sole entity. Our knight with his horse go like all the others towards the point of encounter, the Cathedral square, climb along the omonimous gradient. Once they arrive in Cathedral square, horses and knights wait that the statue of St. Oronzo is taken out from the mother church.
